Wesley - tried your suggestion but when I rt click on srchasst I get a
msg that says I need a msgr3en.dll from the CD (my CD is SP2).

I too can not do a file & folders search via Start/Search - nothing
happens not even a error msg. I can go to say MY DOCUMENTS and click
on the magnifying glass and search my PC that way- so all not lost.

Odd, but I now can’t go to Start/Help & Support - I get a msg that
says sart the Help & support Service- but when I go to SERVICES.MSC -
I see no such Help & Support listed.

You need to insert the Windows XP CD with SP2 integration, not the SP2
update CD.
