Default Windows XP (SP2) System Hang

I am currently running Windows XP (SP2) on a Pentium M 2.2 Ghz, 512 DDR
(3200) machine.

The problem I am running into is Windows hanging when it gets to the
desktop. The taskbar shows up, but nothing in the system tray area (except
the current time). The computer then sits idle for about two or three minutes
(I cannot run anything), and then the computer finishes loading - but only a
few of the icons that should be in the system tray are displayed. The volume,
power management, and plug'n'play icons fail to show up. The computer runs
slightly below what it should at this point.

This problem came fairly out of the blue - I hadn't installed any new
hardware at the time, and hadn't really changed any system settings. I have
found that by manipulating the Services that start when booting up the
computer, it makes a large difference - at one point or two I had actually
managed to eliminate the "hang" and all the proper icons appeared immediately
in the system tray.

My only guess would be that certain services are either conflicting, or the
new wireless network card I have recently installed might be causing
conflictions (the problem started before I put this card in).

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I would start here: "Resources for Troubleshooting Startup Problems in
Windows XP" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308041).
