Default set default program for WAV files

I previously had shareware Goldwave set as default program. To upgrade, I
uninstalled, installed upgrade, and software works fine. When I use Windows
Explorer to try to set the default program, I browse, select Goldwave.exe,
but it does not come up in the list to select. To troubleshoot, I
uninstalled, reinstalled old version, but same result (old version had
previously been set as my default with no problem). Goldwave support was
clueless. Seems like a Windows problem? Using Windows XP Home Edition 2002 w/
service pack 2

Are you saying the association won't keep or gw won't appear in the list
when using OpenWith again later?

Right click a .wav file.
Click Open With.
Click the Browse button.
Browse to Goldwave.exe and double click it.
Make sure the box "Always use the selected......" is checked.
Click OK.

At the point when I double click Goldwave.exe, before checking box "Always
use...", Goldwave does not appear in the list to select. I know that I'm
using the correct exe file, because I tried running the program from it
instead of using shortcut. I'm stumped!
