Default Google Search

Is there a way to add the Google Search engine to your methods of searching
with out adding a Google Tool bar (that typically adds advertisement)?

Close all IE windows.

Copy this into a text file:

--- Begin cut below this line ---
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
"Use Search Asst"="no"
"Search Page"="http://www.google.com"
"Search Bar"="http://www.google.com/ie"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL]
""="http://www.google.com/keyword/%s"
"provider"="gogl"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search]
"SearchAssistant"=http://www.google.com/ie--- End cut above this
line ---Save it as "google.reg" and then double-click on it.

That will cause you to do a Google search when you type something random in
the Address bar. For this to work, make sure that Do not search from the
Address bar is not selected on the Advanced tab from Tools > Internet
Options.

From Internet Explorer, click the Search button to display the Search window.
Click the Custom button.
Click the "Autosearch settings" button.
Select "Google Sites" from the dropdown for "Choose a search provider for
address bar searches.

I want to use the Search from the normal tool bar.... that gives the split
screen. Currently you can customize this to use several search engines. I
usually use MSN, but at times, I would like to click the "Next" button and
have the Google results while using the split screen.

Will this reg file work this way (and not mess up the current search
options)?

Thanks

Auto Search shows Google Sites as a provider and for "When searching" the
tab says "Just display results in the main window". But when I select OK,
nothing happens.

Default Re: Google Search

Hi JCO,

I created a .reg file that Shenan Stanley has suggested. That is working on
my test client.

I suggest you reset all settings of IE first and then apply the .reg file
to test again. To reset all settings of IE:

1. Delete the downloaded objects
1) Open Internet Explorer
2) Click Tools, click Internet Options and click settings button in the
General tab.
3) Press View Objects.
4) Remove all the Objects there.

2. Remove the Plug-Ins in Internet Explorer
1) Close all the Internet Explorer windows.
2) Open a Windows Explorer window by right Click My Computer and choose
Explore.
3) Locate the following folder:
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\PLUGINS
4) Remove all the files in this folder.
Note: You may also move them to another folder.

3. Delete SoftwareDistribution folder
1) Stop Automatic Updates service.
a. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc.
b. In the right pane, stop the Automatic Updates service.
2) Delete C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder.
3) Test the issue again.

4. Reset all settings of Internet Explorer
1) Under the General tab, click Clear history button.
2) Under the Security tab, click Default Level button.
3) Under the Content tab. Under Content Advisor the button default is
"Enable..."
Click on "Clear SSL" under Certificates, and click on "OK."
4) Under "Local Area Network (LAN) settings" click on the "LAN Settings..."
button - remove all checkmarks and settings unless actually required to use
a proxy and close the window
5) Under the Programs tab, click Reset Web Settings.
6) Under the Advanced tab, click Restore Defaults button.
Under Browsing put a checkmark into or remove the checkmark from "Enable
third-party browser extensions (requires restart)".
7) Click on "Apply", then "OK"
8) Close Internet Explorer and restart the computer.

5. Disable all third party Add-ons
1) Open Internet Explorer.
2) Click Tools to select Manage Add-ons.
3) Disable all third party Add-ons.

Hope that helps!

Thanks & Regards,

Ken Zhao
