Phantom printer removal

I've got a printer connected to a W98SE machine that is shared on a SOHO
network with my XP-Home-SP2 machine. Because the W98 driver will not work
with XP, as instructed by the printer manufacturer, I installed an XP driver
for the printer on the XP machine. Everything works, but now I have the
printer listed twice on my printers list. Once as the share, and once as the
printer name which is grayed out (obviously). I want to rename the gray
printer "X-Printer" so it will reside at the bottom of the list so others do
not select it, but can't (there is no printer connected). Right now it is at
the top of the list when printers are selected from apps.
How can I edit this name?
Can I delete the printer name from the list without deleting the driver?

In Control panel, printers and faxes, why not just right click on the printer
you want to be the default, and click set as default printer (it will show a
little tick on the printer icon). That printer will then appear by default in
the print box of all apps (users would have to click the dropdown box to
select a different one).

Yes, that's the setup I have now. A default printer and 3 optional ones,
plus the phantom. The problem is in the drop down box. That's where I need
to remove the name.
I'm thinking I might delete it's name from the registry key, or maybe in
safe mode?

Control Panel -> Printers and Faxes -> right click the printer you
don't want and delete it.

Why? You are not deleting anything of use to the XP system. There
isn't even an XP driver associated with that "Printer", it is just a
print queue that isn't working. The only reason it is there at all is
because it was installed by mistake. Just delete it.

printer through the network, according to TFM. Not true?

No, you need a functional print driver/queue on the XP machine that is
pointed at a shared printer on your Win98 machine.This you have in the
"printer" that works. The other one is not functional because it does
not have a driver, as XP thinks this one points to a print server,
thereby expecting it to provide the driver. Win98 cannot provide this
function thus you had to install the print service with a local print
driver (the "printer" that works).

I learned a long time ago never to go deleting things just because a
stranger tells you to on Usenet. So I tend to look for consensus or an
explanation or KB link before I go and do something.
