Although I am certain that many people find the folder tasks /
templates to be very helpful - I do not. I would love to be able to
modify my folder settings on folders with MP3's, WMV's, AVI's, JPG's
and then, the next time I login, not have them changed back to what
the code pounder in Redmond (no offense to code pounders) thought they
should be.

In other words, I would like to DISABLE permanently and forever this
"FOLDER TASKS" feature. Is this possible? I don't want to tweak the
registry to allow more than 400 folder customizations to be remembered
or click "Use Classic Windows Folders" or "Remember Each Folder..."
NONE of these solve the problem of reverting back to square one, again
and again and again.

Please, tell me there is a way to return to user controlled file
management for those of us who do not need a drool cup. How do I
disable "FOLDER TASKS" forever?

This is the same as choosing "Use Classic Windows Folders" which I
have done, ad nauseum, to no avail. I don't use the Folder Tasks, but,
the folders with media files are sorted and arranged by criteria that
I don't want. If I customize the folder settings, to use the all
documents..., then "in order to see my changes, I have to enable
folder tasks and the same crap starts all over again - for me, it is
like the movie, "Ground Hog Day!"

I was hoping there was a registry tweak (like murdering the SEARCH
ASSISTANT that would allow me to TRULY revert to Classic Windows file
management as in W2K...

I was using the Search Assistant as an example of something that can
be disabled with a simple registry change. It has nothing to do with
the folder issue at all.

Here is a specific example: Let's say I have a folder with 1200 MP3
files and I am actually looking for the files that were created within
the last 24 hours. I right click, choose ARRANGE BY and look at the
options - everything EXCEPT created and modified date. I go into
CHOOSE DETAILS and change them to correspond with what I want (Name,
Type, Date Modified, Date Created...) Whether I have the setting
checked to remember folder settings, click APPLY TO ALL FOLDERS or bow
to the East, what I have just configured will be changed back to the
default folder template for MUSIC by my next Windows session even if I
am not using folder tasks........

Maybe I am dense, here - I am only an IT guy in my day job. I think
the folder templates / folder tasks... are something that I would like
to live without.

If what I am saying makes no sense, I guess that is my problem... and
I am quickly coming to the conclusion that there is no registry tweak
to revert me (and the OS) back to file management that actually was
responsive to the user, instead of at war with the him /her.

I think you are just an idiot. Use your computer as designed. It's been 10 years and morons like you still don't getr it. There is no file management tools in Windows 95 onwards. It's an old concept.

If you're saying you don't like the column choices XP makes for folders it perceives to be music or pics, you can override that as follows:

1) Open regedit & navigate to:
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shel lNoRoam"

2) Delete the subkeys named "BagMRU" and "Bags"

3) Open an ordinary document folder on the desktop or via a shortcut (so you don't have to browse to it) & configure the view to your liking. Then close the folder.

4) Return to regedit and hit "F5" to refresh the view. The "BagMRU" and "Bags" keys should be recreated.

5) Expand the "Bags" key and you should see a single subkey named "1". Select that key.

6) Press "F2" to rename the key. Rename it "AllFolders"

7) Close regedit.
