comp freezes and stop working playing Sims 2, GTA etc

I've been playing Sims 2 since it first came out and at the same time I
bought the GTA: Vice City PC game and they use to work fine for a long time.

But lately everytime I try to play them they work for couple of minutes then
it freezes and I have to restart the comp and then when i try to play again
it freezes again.

I ire-nstalled the games again and it works when I just installed it but
when I shut down the computer and then start it up and play any of the PC
game it starts freezing again.

Does anyone have any ideas or tips on how I could fix this problem?

Multiple potential causes:

Overheating resulting from ventalation fan failure

Overheating from dust or other ventalation obstruction

Overheating from inadequate contact betwen component and heat sink

Intermitent component malfuntion (CPU, GPU, motherboard chipset or memory)

Contaminated or corroded electrical contact.


If you are able to open your computer without violating a warranty or
maintenence agreement you could check to make sure the power supply, CPU
and any other fans operate. You probably shouldn't open the case of a
notebook/laptop except in connection with removeable drive or battery
access. Note that the components inside a computer are very sensitive to
even mild static electric discharges.

Many computer and motherboard manufacturers also have tempreture
monitoring utilities on their web sites. There are also third party
tempreture monitor programs like Everest Home Edition (has other
features) at

I'm having the same issue, but my heatsink and fans are normal. They're
clean and operating normally.

You mentioned inadequate contact between component and heatsink, what do you
mean? CPU fan or someting else?

Could this issue be a waring sign of a failing power supply as well?
