Default Optical Mouse - middle mouse button not recognised by some games

I've just installed a Microsoft Standard Wireless Optical Mouse and Keyboard
- which for the most part work great. The mouse in particular is really
smooth.

I've checked the drivers are up to date but have a major problem - the
middle mouse button (click mouse wheel down) is no longer recognised by many
of my games (Call Of Duty, Brothers In Arms) while it works fine with others
(Half-Life 2, Chronicles Of Riddick).

I'm pretty sure I have the mouse configured as Microsoft intended, and I've
set the middle button as " Forward (browser)". I've also tried tinkering with
other combinations and nothing seems to work.

As a test, I installed my old Logitech optical mouse (cable, not wireless)
and that worked perfectly with all the above games.

So have I set up the mouse wrongly (probably!), is it something with my
computer (running XP Professional), or is this mouse just not man enough to
cope with games?

Many thanks for your help!

Hi Mike,

Try setting the default action for that button to disabled.
Afterwards you should be able to assign an action to that
button using the ingame mouse profile assignment settings..

Hi Jimmy,

I gave it a go and disabled the middle mouse button as you suggested, but
when I tried to map the game controls it was just as before - nothing
happened.

The game was waiting for me to select a valid key - it just didn't recognise
the middle mouse button at all.

Many thanks for your help, but it's back to the drawing board for me (or
bring my my Logitech mouse!).

Regards,

Mike

Hi Mike,

I just looked at my Intellipoint 5.0 Mouse Control Panel applet again,
and I believe you can workaround the issue by setting "Undo" as the
Mousewheel Button action, as it maps the button to "Ctrl+Z".

Hello again Jimmy,

Thanks for your latest post, but again it didn't work. No matter what
function I assign to the middle mouse button, the games just don't recognise
that the button is being clicked, although some other games do.

I have a particular key set-up that I like to use with FPS and third-person
games, so I really want to find a solution to this rather than just use
another key that the game does recognise.

I forgot to mention earlier that I did have a previous Intellimouse that did
work with all these games - the driver was different though, not giving you
the chance to customise the middle mouse button.

Maybe I should uninstall the current drivers and reinstall the old ones?
However this would be a shame in a way as the new mouse, along with the new
driver, is much smoother in all other respects than the old one.

Cheers,

Mike

Hi Mike,

Instead of uninstalling the Intellipoint driver-software lets just kill
the process before launching those games that don't play nicely
with it. Open Task Manager, select the Process tab,
select "point32.exe" and click the End Task button to kill it.

Mike - did you ever get this figured out? I have the same problem.
I've tried the fixes suggested by Jimmy - but nothing has worked so
far. If I plug in my old ps2 intellimouse, the wheel button works
fine... but not the new usb optical MS comfort 3000.

Call the toll-free support telephone number in the packaging. Some of those
apparently had issues. You might also post to
microsoft.public.windowsxp.hardware newsgroup.
