| Richard; | At the time, there is nothing that meets your needs. | There are products that claim to have it all but it is still best to use two | or more spyware detectors and even occasionally get an online virus scan as | a second opinion. | | Computer technology may never get to the state you want. | Until there is, you will not be able to "install it and forget it," | Well stated !! -- Dave http://www.claymania.com/removal-trojan-adware.html http://www.ik-cs.com/got-a-virus.htm |

Security is a process not a piece of hardware or software. If you learn the security features of your browser/OS and use proper security techniques such as not opening unsolicted attachments, keeping your software patched and up to date and avoiding malicous web sites you will find that you don't need to spend time cleaning up malware/viruses. FWIW I run my system without a firewall on a high speed connection or a real time virus scanner and have yet to have a security incident in the MANY years I have run this way. I do regular scans for spyware and viruses and have yet to have found even a malicious cookie. I don't recommend you run this way with a shared computer, if you have kids, or can't be bothered to practice safe hex. |

Zonelabs "Truevector" service caused me a big headache a while ago, it
caused an installed application to malfunction, can't remember which one - possibly Adobe Photoshop or it could have been Micrografix ....just came back to me ....it was Dreamweaver 4, anyway after a hunt round the web I found other people having the same trouble so uninstalled Zonealarm. Dreamweaver was okay after that, I bought a newer version of Dreamweaver but, could never find out how to configure it - so gave up and went back to DW4 regards, Richard "David H. Last spring, I did a reformat/reinstall (XP Pro) for a friend. The install finished. I walked away for lunch. Came back later, started IE, and got popup windows all over the place. I'll avoid the middle of the story, but I found the box was infected with some sort of crap, and I hadn't visited ANY web sites yet. No installed software other than XP. |

As hard as vendors work to make software more Secure - there is a
whole group of Hackers/Crackers/Thief's working to exploit every line of code to make a buck or cause mischief. Security software & personal effort is the hidden "Software-Tax" we all pay to use the Internet. You also did not have a firewall But, you had the computer connected to the
internet probably through DSL or cable. NEVER physically connect to the network without a firewall. -- Jupiter Jones [MVP] http://www3.telus.net/dandemar http://www.dts-l.org "Doug Kanter" <ancientangler@hotmail.com> wrote in message news:Hpgvf.1243$qg.890@news02.roc.ny... > You're very lucky, then. Exactly right. Never again. I hadn't done a windows update yet, so it was XP
Pro, "the old way", before modification. Ah ha....you didn't say you had a router. :-) And yes, none of the good stuff had been installed or tweaked yet on the machine in question. |
