Hi there. I want to add a second hard drive. Installation doesn't seem to be
too hard, I've been visiting a few sites that offer help with hard drive
installation. My problem is this. There are I beleive two types of HD. IDE &
SCSI. My PC is three years old, ADVENT3307 What type of HD should I fit?

It is quite unlikely that you have a SCSI hard drive. Open the computer
and look at the drive that is in there now. It will have a brand name
on it. Go to the drive mftr.'s website and look up the specs for your
drive.

Actually there are three types of hard drives around now that are popular.
The standard IDE drive, SCSI and Serial ATA(IDE). A three year old computer
probably has a standard IDE drive in it unless pretty big bucks were paid
for a SCSI drive. The easiest way to check is to start Device manager.

Right click My Computer, left click Manage, left click Device Manager. On
the right side of the screen click the + next to Disk Drives. One at a
time, right click on each drive shown there and then left click Properties
then click on details tab. This will tell you whether the device is an IDE,
USB, SCSI, etc. as the first part of the details.

Well that depends on whether or not you have a SCSI controller. I would
guess that your computer has IDE. Take the cable from your old drive to
the store and they can tell you if it's SCSI or IDE. Or just look at
the connector that your HD cable is plugged into. If it says something
like IDE1 then it's IDE.

If you had a SCSI adapter you'd pretty surely know it. Since your
machine is three years old and you don't know about SCSI, odds are
about 44 99/100% that you need an IDE drive.

There are considerably more than two types, although several are pretty much
obsolete now. Today there are three types in fairly common use: SCSI,
parallel ATA (aka PATA, IDE, or EIDE), and serial ATA (aka SATA).

Unless you have a custom configuration (and you would likely know if you
did), almost certainly you have the second type, parallel ATA (aka PATA,
IDE, or EIDE). But to be sure, right-click on my Computer, choose
Properties, and go to the Device Manager tab. It will tell you there what
you have.

It's easiest to add a drive of the type you already have, but the other
types can be added too. However, you would probably not have motherboard
support for them and would have to buy and install a separate add-in
controller card.
