Default Need recommendation on antivirus & firewall

Hello . I am presently using Symantec products on Windows XP, but knowing
that these can be resource hogs, it is time for a change. Any help is
welcome.

Thanks

If you're willing to purchase AV, I'd recommend eTrust 7.0. For the
freeware AV's, I'd choose AVG or Avast. For firewall, I'd just get
the Zone Alarm Free version which provides adequate protection
but needs a little training to learn what to allow & block. If you choose
Zone Alarm be sure during setup to choose the free version or you'll
end up with a trial version and a 30-day nag to pay the full price.

I switched to F-Secure after many years with Symantec, which had started
giving all sorts of problems on 3 PC's (NIS 2005)
Got a 4/5 month free trial!

Well, sad to say that in Symantec's ongoing assimilation of smaller,
better companies they've recently acquired Sygate. They wasted
no time in discontinuing Sygate Personal Firewall, with some type
of inducement to move to Norton Internet Security.

I've not found that the Symantec branded products are a resource
problem, the Norton Branded ones appear to be.

As for a firewall, if you have DSL/Cable or other ethernet provided
internet device, get at least a NAT Router. While a NAT Router is not a
firewall it's about as good as anything you can run on your PC, better
in many cases.

A good product but unfortunately it was bought out by Symantec and
immediately killed. Kerio is also a good alternative. It has been
resurrected by Sunbelt.

Free products for AV: Avast or Avg
Free products for firewall: Kerio or Zone Alarm.

oh wow, I didn't know that. I used to use Zone Alarm (with my ME computer)
until I realized it interfered with the system restore points (they were no
longer restoring). I uninstalled it and then it worked perfectly.

Are there any other firewall's that work ok?! I don't have my sygate
working at the moment (due to other troubles I am trying to work out with
the windows update)
