Happy New Year!! I just upgraded computers from an old (5 yrs?) HP Vectra
(single PIII dual hard drives) running Win2KPro to a 2-yr old BOXX 3D R3s (dual AMD processors, dual hard drives) running WinXP Pro--big jump up! The BOXX is an offlease machine that came with an OEM installation of WinXP Pro complete w/ COA and product key. Being only moderately technical, I used the wizard provided in the XP utilities to migrate my files from the HP Vectra to the BOXX thinking this would be the safe, non-destructive method. The overview in the wizard even said it was suitable for moving files from a Win2K to a WinXP machine. Hmmmm. As it is, the BOXX runs but stutters, XP does not shut down the PC correctly and several programs hang up whenever I attempt to start them. Long story short: Many of the files moved should have been left behind (i.e., HP diagnostic .exes and more). Now I need to know how to start over by reformatting the hard drives. I do not have the WinXP Pro CD to reload but I do have the product key. I am posting this from my work PC since Internet Explorer is one of the stuttering programs on the BOXX. -- Learning Design to Design Learning |

The transfer wiz does not transfer programs. An exe is a program and would
not get installed unless you did so manually, or it was already on the machine. Go to control panel and uninstall programs that you are not using. Clean up the PC before you use it regularly. Run virus and spyware scans. Check with Boxx, they might have installed windows on a hidden partition. Check your root drive usually c: if there is a I386 folder. If there is one you might be able to run a sfc /scannow command to check if missing or currupt files is the reason for your problems.
