App log in Event Viewer Won't resize upwards

System is a PIV 2.53 Ghz with 1 Gb ram, SP2 updated. Clean from viruses
and spyware. System functions fine, but has a quirk in the application
log of event viewer. The log clears itself every few days on boot up no
matter what the settings are for maximum size, or which is selected for
overwrite events. The system log is set to 8192 KB and Do not overwrite
events. It's size is 8192 KB from Explorer, but the AppEvent.Evt file
shows at 64 KB and doesn't change if the size is changed from
Application | Properties in Event Viewer.

I've tried various sizes and overwrite options, Restore defaults, and
Clear Log. I have also deleted the AppEvent.Evt file. Still the same
behavior.

Anyone have any ideas on this? Thanks
