Default Unable to open applications

Hi

Using XP Pro on my pc something has happened to cause applications not to
open i.e. IE6, Word, Access

Have tried booting up using Last known good configuration but with same
results.

Any suggestions as to what is causing the problem and how to correct would
be appreciated

TIA

Tom

Does this happen with all .exe files? Are there any error messages, or
anything in event viewer?

Also is the system clean of malware? If so how did you determine that?

With respect to IE6, Word, Access there are no error messages and the event
viewer says that the application is running.

Have not checked for any Malware or anything else as I did not wanted to get
some feedback to try to identify the problem first.

How would you recommend to check for Malware?

Tom

Here are general malware removal steps. Follow them systematically and
then, when you know the machine is 100% virus/malware, if you are still
having problems post back with the results of your troubleshooting.

I see Malke responded on malware checking. That should be a regular
maintenance task. Here are some more links on that.

THE PARASITE FIGHT
Finding, Removing & Protecting Yourself From Scumware
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm

Richard Harper’s Guide to Cleaning Pests
http://rgharper.mvps.org/cleanit.htm

What about other .exe files? Can they be run or not? If no .exe files
can be run one option is to run the .exe file fix from Doug Knox' site:

XP Fixes
File Association Fixes
EXE File Association Fix (Restore default association for EXE files)
