I'm running WinXP ... It was installed as XP and then upgraded with
various service packs. Microsoft's update page says I'm up to date. When I go to certain web pages, it says I need to update to Internet Explorer 6. When I go to install Internet Explorer 6, it says I already have a newer version installed. The "about" says I've got IE 6.0.2900.2180 apsp-sp2-gdr. 050301-1519 Is there a way to reinstall IE without editing the registry per:??? http://support.microsoft.com/default...bid=318378#kb1 |

Give us some URLs and people can check them out for you. Apparently you have the most current version of IE installed. The problem may lie on the particular webpages and not on your computer. (Courtesey of MVP Mike Burgess) Several of these are known to cause the
problem: 1) Zone Alarm Pro [Private Header Info - enabled?]: Reset "Ad Blocking" and "Cookie Control" to "medium" "Mobile Code Control" = Off 2) Symantec (ISS\NIS) [Enable Browser Privacy - enabled] Active Content - "Allow All Scripts To Execute". Problem: some sites cannot detect the 128 bit encryption Solution: Completely remove and reinstall NIS. 3) Any "ad blocking" software that blocks "http_referer" or contains entries that are blocking access to the desired site. 4) HOSTS file that contains entries that are blocking access to the desired site. 5) Cookie blocking software blocking "required" Cookies. 6) Pop-up blockers stripping header\url info. 7) WebWasher Standard Filter/URL Filter 8) Make sure the following Registry entry is not corrupt: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Internet Settings] "User Agent"="Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0 "-- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE/OE, Shell/User, Security), Aumha.org VSOP, DTS-L.org windsurferLA wrote: > I'm running WinXP ... Thanks for hints.
Reviewing the situation, I see that problem is MSNBC unique as far a I can tell. I can view videos on my Yahoo home page from within the Firefox browser. So far, it is only the MSNBC page videos that do not come through, and it is only the links associated with the MSNBC pages that claim I need to install IE6 (which is already installed and up-to-date). I've run through your list of possible causes. At this point, my position is that if I must compromise my setup to view MSNBC, then I'll just give up on accessing MSNBC. Re (1) I don't use zone alarm (2) Norton System Works is installed. I need to check settings. (3) I don't have specific add blocking software. (4) I have discontinued using my router to block specific sites. (5) I have some restrictions on cookies, but I don't think its problem (6) I do have Firefox set to block pop-ups. I'm not about to disable. (7) I don't use web washer (8) My registry entry shows Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE6, Win32) PA Bear wrote: > (Courtesey of MVP Mike Burgess) Several of these are known to cause the > problem: > > 1) Zone Alarm Pro [Private Header Info - enabled?]: Reset "Ad Blocking" and > "Cookie Control" to "medium" "Mobile Code Control" = Off > > 2) Symantec (ISS\NIS) [Enable Browser Privacy - enabled] Active Content - > "Allow All Scripts To Execute". Update... All of sudden, for unknown reason, I can now view MSNBC
videos when I open MSNBC using IE. When I use Firefox, I still get the "need to install IE6" message. It could be that my Firefox browser is set to block something required by MSNBC or that MSNBC does not conform with the web browser standards expected by Firefox. windsurferLA wrote: > Thanks for hints. > > Reviewing the situation, I see that problem is MSNBC unique as far a I > can tell.
