Memory

Hello

I am new to this, might seem like a stupid question, but I am using Windows
XP.
I would like to know how do I heck how much memory do I have left. I can't
seem to find it it only tells me what my total memory is

start>run>msinfo32

OR

press ctrl+alt+del to open Task Manager, performance tab.
Look at Physical Memory
Total and Available

Why do you want to know? In XP unused memory is wasted memory, and it
tries it's best to find a use for all of the memory. The less free the
better. The only problem is if you don't have enough which requires the
page file to be used too much slowing things. If that's the case you
need more, but in general the issue of free memory is not important as
it once was.

Press CTL-ALT-DEL to bring up Task Manager (or right click the taskbar and
choose Task Manager)
Click the Performance Tab and look for the section labeled "Physical
Memory". This should get you started. There's lots more information on this
tab if you want to investigate other properties of your computer.

However, be very careful of what you read into that number. Despite what
many people think, it is *not* desirable to have substantial free memory.

Wanting to minimize the amount of memory Windows uses is a counterproductive
desire. Windows is designed to use all, or nearly all, of your memory, all
the time, and that's good not bad. Free memory is wasted memory. You paid
for it all and shouldn't want to see any of it wasted.

Windows works hard to find a use for all the memory you have all the time.
For example if your apps don't need some of it, it will use that part for
caching, then give it back when your apps later need it. In this way Windows
keeps all your memory working for you all the time.

Then XP works quite differently from VMS (which is the OS which is the one I
know the most about).
In fact, VMS performs poorly if the free memory list is quite low. It will
also hang if the pagefile is too small.
