After installing the latest version Win Zip10 I started getting the
display of the Common Folder when the PC boots up. There is nothing in it. I can close it. The operation of the PC is not affected. After checking around including Microsoft I found one Knowledge Base article (Q170086 that sort of refers to it, but the two registery keys it identifies as the culprits are clean. Some of the entries have quote marks others don't, but all that do have quote marks have then in place at both ends of the string. I didn't find any single quote marks. The Registery Keys are: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run I'm assuming that something is corrupted in yet another registery key. What other keys should I check and what should I look for in them? |

First click Start > Run, type in: msconfig and press Enter. Look under
the Startup tab for anything that might be associated with the folder and uncheck it. -- Brian A. There appear to be some inconsistencies with respect to the need for
quotes - some entries evidently require them, and others don't. The "error" is certainly not always obvious. In MSCONFIG, locate any entries that relate to WinZip (since that's what you've just installed and hence is the most likely candidate). Unmatched quotes are obvious enough to spot. If there aren't any of these, then you'll probably find an entry without ANY quotes, so put quotes around this entry, being careful with their location around switches, parameters, etc. Best to look at an existing similar entry and follow the syntax of that one. Any changes you make will have to be made in the Registry, according to the location of the offending entry as shown in MSCONFIG. |

I did that but the Common Folder still displays at startup. Any further
suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. You mentioned looking in only 2 reg Run keys, did you check any of the
other Run keys? Did you check the Start > Programs > Startup folder? Most likely won't be there but worth a check. Is this a WinZip or Windows folder? If it's a WZ folder look in it's options for anything that is set to run on startup. If it's a Windows folder see if this helps: Open either MyComputer or Explorer. On the Menu bar click Tools > Folder Options...... > View tab. Scroll down to " Restore previous folder......." and if it is selected, remove the selection. Click Apply > Ok > Ok. Reboot. -- Brian A.
