Even though I'm still not convinced of the value, after much study and prep I
decided to install SP2. I followed all suggestions for a successful install.
Downloaded all current updates to SP1, disabled McAfee virus and firewall,
and ZeroSpyware spyware programs even removed them from startup after full
clean scans, removed all virtual drives i.e. Game Drive, I am the
administrator.
I used the install disc and after indicating a successful install I
restarted the system.
I then got the "Sorry Windows was unable to start" screen. I let it try to
restart after count down but just got the same screen. I then started in
safe mode and was able to access Windows. I removed SP2 and restored to
SP1. I then tried to update to SP2 via Windows update site with the same
results. What am I missing?
I am running SATA Raid 0, and have a gig of memory even though Msinfo32
shows only 512 MB, the system is 2 year old assembled by ABS Computers.

XP2 is totally recommended over XP original.

I did not update BIOS but was told by manufacturer that it would not be
neccessary. She still will not SP2 me.

Ok there was a problem with some Prescott processors which needed a bios
update. Haven't heard of a similar issue with yours.

In the past I have found my anti spyware program ZeroSpyware to be thorough
in protecting against and detecting spyware. I will run some of the other
spyware detection programs you suggested and post the HijackThis log if
neccessary. I am going to try a bios update also.

I know anothing about the particular product you use, but note that Eric
Howes, who has done extensive testing on Anti-Spyware products states

"No single anti-spyware scanner removes everything. Even the best-performing
anti-spyware scanner in these tests missed fully one quarter of the
"critical" files and Registry entries"

Be very careful. Although a BIOS upgrade normally goes well, it is not
without danger. If something goes wrong while the upgrade is an progress
(for example, a lapse in power) you can be left with no BIOS at all, and an
unbootable computer. I think many BIOS upgrades are done when they shouldn't
be.

I agree, my moto is if it's not broke don't fix it. One reason I still
don't have SP2 on my system. The BIOS upgrade is very straight forward
through my BIOS supplier they have something called an @BIOS utility that
makes it close to fail proof, and my GIGABYTE mother board has dual BIOS
technology for BIOS backup.
I do run other spyware programs from time to time i.e. Adaware etc. but they
never find anything in part because ZeroSpyware is so good. I have a very
clean well protected fast running system that shows no signs of infection.
That is why I am perplexed over PS2's failure to load. I am tempted to
ignore it and wait for Longhorns release. But I now consider it a challenge
to get that SP2 thing buzzing.
