Will there be a strong desktop performance increase from specifically
combining two Western Digital Raptors 75GB 10K rpm into a RAID-0 array? This
array is considered server-enterprise quality, comparable to an expensive and
durable SCSI array; this should reduce concerns for drive failure. This
array would be the operating system boot drive, supporting all applications
and games. Files and videos will be saved to a different hard drive. From
this particualr model hard drive, will gaming be smoother from better reads
in a RAID-0, or is it simply best to work off a single raptor drive?

Unless your game LOADS file DURING the session, RAID-0 will have no
impact on the games playing performance (such as frame rate), only when
loading maps and starting up.

I wouldn't trust RAID-0 for any purpose. It's got to be one of the
dumbest storage ideas since spanning netware volumes accross disks.
Another recipe for failure.

RAID-0 does not reduce concerns on drive failure! Each drive on/in the RAID-o
is independent from the others. There is no "security" in case of drive
failures. If one of the drives fail, that it for you files, since a huge
section will be lost!

RAID-1 offers you security against drive failures. This is also known as
Mirroring hard drive. What ever is written to the first drive is
automatically "copied" to the second drive.


There is no "boost" in performance with RAID. However, there is usually a
"slight" decrease is performance because the RAID-1 needs to write to two
drives. There is no benefit with games since most of the action is in the RAM
and on the network/Internet.
