Default slow start up

When I start up my laptop it takes about five minutes for everything to load.
the last thing to appear is the Norton symbol. When I run msconfig there
are alot of things i the startup folder. How do I know what I can disable to
make it start up faster?

Default RE: slow start up

Try pressing one of the Shift keys during the startup (the keys with the
arrow pointing up) to prevent the startup programs loading.

If the boot is fast, boot into XP and enter msconfig in the start => run
box. The startup programs are listed under the Startup tab. Experiment
disabling them until you find the culprit.

Check this page for some of those things and if they are needed.

To see which program is causing the slow start up, and it could be the
Norton program, do some clean boot troubleshooting:

How to Troubleshoot By Using the Msconfig Utility in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=310560

How to perform advanced clean-boot troubleshooting in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=316434

Here are some resources to check to see what all those programs are that
are loading:

http://www.answersthatwork.com/Taskl...s/tasklist.htm
http://castlecops.com/StartupList.html
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm
http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm

To stop programs from running on startup the first step should be to
check in the options for the program you don't want to start and see if
there is a setting to tell it not to run at startup. The next step is
to remove any entries you don't want from the two startup folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

For anything else uncheck their entries in the startup tab of msconfig:
Start | Run | Msconfig | Ok

Another option is to remove the reference to them from one of these keys
in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\RunOnce

Make sure you have a backup of the registry using a program like ERUNT
before making any changes to the registry.
