I installed Nero 7 ultra edition trial version and later uninstalled
it. I did not assign any file associations to Nero but after removing it, my avi, mpg, and dvr-ms associations with Windows media player 10 had been removed. Reassigning them is easy enough but problems remain with other programs, most notably Forte Agent 1.93. Now when I try to launch from Agent I get the oft reported "There is no application associated with MIME type application/octet stream". I've gone through all of the instructions for repairing this problem but nothing seems to work. When I select an application (Windows Media Player, or for that matter, any other app that plays the media type) I get a file not found message. Tried to add a mime type in General Preferences but that doesn't work either. I've seen dozens of reports specific to Agent but no fixes (tried uninstalling and removing reg entries and reinstalling but to no avail). I'd like to know if there is a fix but also am curious as to why Nero seemingly created the problem. Thanks My OS: WindowsXP SE Media Edition |

Try reinstalling Media Player 10. Hopefully that will fix the issue.

I'm not much help, but there should be a warning label on Nero. The
un-installation of Nero and Roxio cause more problems the almost all other software put together. And that's all I'm going to say on that. Thanks.
This (http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm) had a fix for mpg but not for avi, which I still can't restore. > there should be a warning label on Nero Good point. I went into reg entries for media files and still found Nero associations (NeroShowTime.Files7.avi) even though Nero is gone. Thanks Because Nero has grown to a bloated OS hog that arrogantly takes over file associations without asking. At least I assume it didn't ask, I haven't tried version 7. When you installed it, did it give you the option of automatic or custom/advanced installs? If so, did you choose the custom one? That's usually where a piece of software will ask you if you want to re-associate different file types with it. |
