Default Help me fix XP

I was loading Quickbooks 2006, it was going along fine. then some Internet
Explorer windows came up, almost like pop-ups. The instal errored out and I
quit. I closed all the IE windows.

Now all the icons, except Recycle bin, have generic looking icons. Nothing
will run, not even My Computer. I can click Start, and see all the programs,
but still nothing runs. I figured I would do a System Restore, but that won't
run either. Under the run command nothing works either. I type msconfig or
cmd or regedit, I get a message that says there is no program associated.

I would like to avoid re-installing XP, any ideas?

I found that link in another thread, I printed it out and am going to try it.
The computer with the problem is not at this location, so I am trying to
gather as much info as I can before I head back there.

Thanks

I was going through the "repair" install, it was at the point where it was
"installing devices", then it went to a blue screen that says:

A problem has been detected..............

Just below that opening statement is says:

BAD_POOL_CALLER

Now when I reboot it goes back into the instal and stops at that same point
everytime. I can boot to the CD and start over but I get the same results.

Help

Thanks for asking, but too late for that.

I tried to do a repair instal, it errored out, in the same place, about 6
times. I ended up doing a clean instal, and I'm still in the process of
loading hardware and software.

Thanks again, everyone.

From your initial description my guess is that you may have been
infected with some sort of malware that had nothing directly to do with
installing Quickbooks. The software installation on a subsequently
unstable system produced further system problems.

For future reference be aware that a repair install will not remove
spyware, adware, trojans, worms or viruses.

Now that you are doing a clean install make sure you protect your PC.
Before going online make sure your firewall is enabled (if XP sp2 it
should be on by default). Get a good antivirus package, several are
free, I use AVG Free avaialble here:
