Default Windows XP maintanance

What is the best software to keep XP running at full speed?
Should the registry be cleaned?

I have had several problems that I have had to fix. (reinstalls)

Is there one tool that does it all?

I am a very heavy user.

Thanks,
Scott

1. Run Defrag maybe everyother week
2. Run a check Disk from time to time (chkdsk)
3. Remove .tmp files
4. Clean out your Internet Explorer Temp file (Internet Options / Click on
Delete Internet Temp Files)
5. Run a virus scan daily
6. Have a spyware program installed to keep the bugs out.

This should keep things clean and running good for the most part.....

No special tools are required nor desirable.

No. Registry cleaners are much more likely to create problems than to solve
them.

You may have had problems, but it was highly unlikely that reinstalls were
required to fix them. Although sometimes a problem is bad enough that a
reinstall is needed, in the great majority of cases, a far less draconian
solution is available.

No. No more than there is one magic pill you can take that will solve all
your medical problems.

Have you tried the Atkins diet? ;-)

I use all of System Mechanic 6's
functions; my sustem is purring and I had NEVER had any problems!
Ever.....!

So..why not take your chances. I won't say that System Mechanic 6 is
the best because I might be biased. Check the reviews for PC-cillin,
System Mechanic, Norton System Works, et al...and try a free download
before you buy.
Happy New Year,
PS: Those that say don't? I wonder!

Maybe "Don't" is the wrong term. Take a System Image before you start
and use Registry Cleaners all day long. If 99 out of 100 people use it and
don't have a problem that's OK. If you're the single user who ruins his/her
PC because of a Registry Cleaner you'll sing a different tune. Nobody will
dispute that 3rd-Party programs leave remnants in the Registry. Letting a
automated tool pick what Registry Keys/Values to remove is "Risky". So
the "Don't" people are looking out for the user's interest. Most folks want
the PC to simply work and aren't interested in Tweaks & Tune-ups to get
some imaginary performance gain or boot time reduction. Remember the
remnant Keys & values come from 3rd-Party applications not XP itself.
When & if Microsoft releases a Registry Cleaner for XP and beyond then
the discussion might change a bit, until then they (Registry Cleaners) are
an
accident waiting to happen.

I have two points in reply:

1. I use *none*l of System Mechanic 6's functions (or any other such
package); my sustem is purring and I had NEVER had any problems! Ever.....!

2. Some people have unprotected sex with strangers and have no problems. The
experience of a single person is not significant. If you have been fortunate
enough not to have probles, that's great, but that doesn't mean that in the
larger statistical world it's safe.
