Default Add or remove programs tool malfunctions or(corrupted)? Windows XP

Whenever I click on the add /remove programs tool in the control panel, all i
get is a blank white box with minimize and close buttons on upper right---and
it just hangs(freezes). I try closing but takes very long. Need help in
getting the aforementioned tool to work correctly. Any suggestions would be
much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Hi

The appwiz.cpl file could be corrupted. See if there a copy of that file in
the windows\system32\dllcache folder and copy/paste it to the
windows\system32 folder.

Failing that, run the following command from Start>Run with your XP CD to
hand:

sfc /scannow

Dear Will,
Thanks for the suggestion. I can't find the windows/system32/dllcache folder
in the windows/system32 folder. Thus, i don't know if there is a copy of
appwiz.cpl in that folder. However i did a search and resulted in 2
appwiz.cpl files--1 in windows/system32 folder and the other in
Windows/ServicePackFiles/i386. Is this info useful??

Hi

Try a search for

dllcache

it 'should' be there. Try running the following command from Start>Run

sfc /scannow

If the dllcache folder isn't on the hard disk, you may get an error message.
Please have your XP CD to hand.

Are the two appwiz.cpl files the same size and date?

Hi. I've found the system32/dllcache folder and the appwiz.cpl file therein.
(Said folder was hidden so i coudn't find it earlier). Replaced appwiz.cpl in
system32 folder and rebooted but still Add/Remove programs tool freezes when
selected.
That said, maybe, this malfunction has something to do with the unins000.dat
file of installed programs...is this correct??
