FWIW rather than use the word "caused" here I would substitute "needs".
The idea is to change your symptoms by taking away globally a condition
that some malware or broken third-party extensions would require to operate.
E.g., by preventing *all* such programs from working you prevent bad ones
from producing their unwanted symptoms without knowing which they are.

I suspect you do need to do 5b; otherwise why is the option unchecked?
E.g. perhaps you are covering up a previously undiagnosed (and probably
different) symptom with it? Perhaps now that undiagnosed symptom's
cause, still being present, is resulting in new unwanted symptoms,
even though not all of its functionality is possible (because you have
tried to disable it and all others globally). Etc.


You have not disclosed your OS and maintenance level.
Since you are cross-posting to an XP newsgroup we can guess
that the OS is XP but unless you are also running XPsp2
the above common diagnostic is all that you can be offered without
additional qualification and without referring to third-party diagnostics
(such as BHODemon.) E.g., if you are running XPsp2 you could
try using its new Manage Add-ons feature (Alt-T,A) to try to isolate
unwanted symptoms to particular subsets of such programs.
