Default System 32 Window Opens On Start-up

Hi All,

I recenly realised that the Windows "System 32" window was opening on
startup, I don't knwo why this is the case. I don't believe my computer is
infected in any way, and I only reformatted and re-installed XP less than 2
weeks ago, so I think generally my computer should be in good health. I
recently installed MSN and Yahoo IM on my computer, is it possible the
problem is related to any of those programs?

Anyone have any soloutions for this?

I have tried:

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;170086

I couldn't really find any values that matched up with what this article
refers to.

-------
Regards,
CB.

Information by Bruce Chambers:

This can be caused by a blank entry, such as can be left behind by an
incomplete program removal, in the:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and/or
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.

And from MVP Kelly Theriot's site, line 260 on the right-hand site:

Ricky,

Thanks for the link, but the script says it is unable to repair the issue on
my computer.

Malke,

Thanks for your info on this, I tried the link but the script was unable to
resolve the problem.

Also my registry values in the locations you suggested are...

HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run :

NAME DATA

(Default) (value not set)

ctfmon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe
(should that DATA address be in "quotes"?)

MSNSGS "C:\Program
Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
(note there is a space between the end quotation mark and /background.)

Yahoo Pager -quiet

AND:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run :

NAME DATA

(Default) (value not set)
AcctMgr C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Password
Manager\AcctMgr.exe /startup
Apoint C:\Program Files\Apoint2K\Apoint.exe
ccApp "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec
Shared\ccApp.exe"
CeEKey C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\E-KEY\CeEKey.exe
CeEPOWER C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\Power
Management\CePMTray.exe
HotKeysCmds C:\WINDOWS\System32\hkcmd.exe
HP Software Update C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe
HPUsageTracking "C:\Program Files\HP\HP UT\bin\hppusg.exe"
"C:\Program Files\HP\HP UT\"
IgfxTray C:\WINDOWS\System32\igfxtray.exe
iTunesHelper "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe"
NDSTray C:\Program
Files\TOSHIBA\ConfigFree\NDSTRAY.EXE
Net-It Launcher C:\WINDOWS\system32\NILaunch.exe
PinnacleDriverCheck C:\WINDOWS\system32\PSDrvCheck.exe
QuickTime Task "C:\Program
Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
SunJavaUpdateSched C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\jusched.exe
Symantec NetDriver Monitor C:\PROGRA~1\SYMNET~1\SNDMon.exe /Consumer
TkBellExe" C:\Program Files\Common
Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
TomcatStartup 2.5 C:\Program
Files\Hewlett-Packard\Toolbox\hpbpsttp.exe
TPNF C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\TouchPad\TPTray.exe
WinampAgent "C:\Program Files\Winamp\Winampa.exe"

I am not too clued up about registry editing, but I am assuming that it
doesn't matter if the addresses in the DATA field are not all set in quotes?
Is there anything here that needs rectifying in your opinion?

(snip)

Your registry entries look OK to me (although someone else may spot
something). I'd try clean-boot troubleshooting:

Clean Boot - http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=310353
and How to Troubleshoot By Using the Msconfig Utility in Windows XP -

Malke,

Thanks for that link, I think I have diagnosed my problem now. From going
through the clean boot proceedure in MSCONFIG. On the Start Up tab,
"Startup item -quiet", "Command - quiet", "Location -
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run " is the item that seems
to be causing the problem. I think this may be related to Yahoo IM, as I
beleive I started recognising the problem shortly after installing Yahoo.
Notice (below) from my registry entries that the DATA in the column
referencing the Yahoo Pager reads as "-quiet" which matches up in some way
with what MSCONFIG identified as the offending Start Up item in the Startup
and Command columns...

HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run :

NAME DATA
(Default) (value not set)
ctfmon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe
MSNSGS "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
Yahoo Pager -quiet

I am going to just disable the Start Up item for now in MSCONFIG, and
configure MSCONFIG so that it doesn't prompt me every startup telling me I
am in selective or diagnostic start up mode. Do you think I should
uninstall Yahoo and re-install, correct the registry value somehow, or just
leave the Start Up item disabled?

Good job t-shooting! I'd just leave the entry disabled in Startup and
check the msconfig box that basically says "don't bother me about this
again". Of course, if you don't *use* the Yahoo IM, uninstall it.
