I have completely reloaded a fresh XP Home Edition on my computer. On
applying the updates I get as far as downloading SP2 but it will not install
and the computer seizes and continually reboots itself without stopping.

I suggest you Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should
help by allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click
on the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced,
StartUp and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before
Automatically Restart.

Enable automatic restart on system failure after you have captured /
copied and pasted the message in a further post here.

There will also be Error Reports in Event Viewer. Please post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report
complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after exiting from Event Viewer.

If you can't get into Windows and use method Gerry Cornell suggested, do this:
Boot up while tapping F8 key.
Select "Disable auto restart on system failure"

SP 2 downloaded and installed. When asked to restart the PC, on restart the
following STOP ERROR SCREEN appeared.

The main message on blue screen is:

BAD_POOL_HEADER

Technical Information

***STOP: 0x00000019 (0x00000020, 0x8F20328, 0x81F20360, 0xA070001)

I will now to go in to safe mode to remove SP2 to continue.

Please advise what shall I do?

Windows XP?

Was it to change an item of hardware or for some other reason?

It is possible that you need to update one or more drivers before installing
SP2.

Would check Event Viewer for Warning / Error Report in the System and
Application since you abandoned the last attempt at installing SP2.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties. Hardware,
Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?
