Default Defragmenter no longer works

My Disk Defragmenter no longer works, a possible casualty of Diskeeper. Nor,
for that matter, does Norton's Speed Disk. Disk Defragmenter says "Disk
Defragmenter could not start" and Speed Disk says "Speed Disk is unable to
access Drive C. Please check to see if another application has the drive
locked."

I've looked at many of the postings on this site, and one of best responses
I have seen is AndreasRoom.com. I made the changes in the command prompts as
suggested, but still no luck. (I was not able to find the windows\inf folder
as suggested--any suggestions?)

I also changed the setting to System Managed Size under Virtual Memory in
the Control Panel as suggested by another writer, but still no luck.

What's left to do? I'd love to hear from some of you smart people on this
issue. My computer badly needs to be defragmented.

Thanks!

\WINDOWS\inf is a Hidden folder.

Paste the following in Start | Run and click OK...

%windir%\inf

Right click dfrg.inf and select Install

To display Hidden files and folders...

Thanks to Wesley, I was able to find the hidden folder and install dfrg.inf.

But Disk Defragmenter still does not work.....

I'm about ready to throw my computer out the door, but not yet.....

Any other suggestions?

Marv:

I downloaded and ran the file but to no avail. At least, I thought I ran
it; it opened and closed too fast to tell--but it's only 69K.

Thanks anyway. Any other ideas?

Ed,
Are all of the Defragmenter programs still installed?
If so you might check their options to see if any of them have C drive locked.

Hope this helps!

Ed,

defrag.exe has to run from a command prompt.

dfrg.msc is the file that has all the pretty colors.

What happens if you open a command prompt...
Start | Run | Type: cmd | Click OK |
Type defrag /? in the command prompt and hit Enter?
Do you get the Usage info? Or an error message? If an error message,
what's the message?

What happens if you...
Start | Run | Type: dfrg.msc | Click OK
Does Disk Defragmenter open? Or do you get an error message? If an error
message, what's the message? If Disk Defragmenter opens what happens if you
click Analyze? Or if you click Defragment?

Marv:

Very good question, but I don't know how to answer it because I can't find
the program(s) anywhere and even if I could I wouldn't know how to determine
if they have the C drive locked.

It occurred to me that perhaps Diskeeper deleted some or all of Disk
Defragmenter. I've looked on the Microsoft website for possible downloads
and/or upgrades for Defragmenter but found nothing.

Where would you suggest that I go from here? Sorry to be such a bother.

Default Re: Defragmenter no longer works

Back to Wesley this time:

In response to defrag/? I get usage info, not an error message, e.g.,
volume, analyze only, force...., verbose output, etc.

In response to dfrg.msc, Defragmenter does open, as always, but when I click
on Analyze or Defragment, I get the usual response: "Disk Defragmenter could
not start."

What does this tell you?

Default Re: Defragmenter no longer works

Ed,

What happens if you open a command prompt, type
defrag C:
and hit Enter?

Try running The System File Checker (sfc.exe).

Start | Run | Type or paste: sfc /scannow | Click OK

This will take a while.

If SFC.EXE did anything it will be in the Event Viewer.

Open the Event Viewer...
Start | Run | Type: eventvwr | Click OK |
Click System | Look at any Windows File Protection
entries

More info..
scannow sfc (sfc.exe)
http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html

After running sfc, reregister dfrgui.dll and dfrgsnap.dll.

Start | Run | Type: regsvr32 dfrgui.dll | Click OK

Start | Run | Type: regsvr32 dfrgsnap.dll | Click OK

Hope this helps. Let us know.
