Default how to switch sound off

Can I switch sound off in xp home but still have it available if I play Cds
etc, its mainly the start up sounds that I dont want.

Select (None) for the events that you do not want sounds for.

[Control Panel]
[Sounds and..]
(Sounds Tab)
Program Events Windows - One by one select Events
then in the sounds box select whatever sound you want
(which can include "None").

Go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Sounds and Audio Devices. On the
Sounds tab, you can choose" none" for any sound (like the startup sound) you
don't want at all, or change it to some other sound.
