I am having a hard time booting my machine which operates on windows XP
Professional--latest version. When I boot it goes to the windows apology screen and highlights "start windows normally". After doing this about 7 or eight times, I finally get the starting windows screen with the little blue blobs runnning across the centre. then it stops on a black screen and I have to re-boot and it brings me back to the same screen about five times before I finally get "Welcome". Then after I finally get on sometimes it reboots by itself later on. The local Pc Shop doesn't have a problem with my machine on their workbench. I've checked all the logs and found two things. -- WDM call returned error:4200 --NT event Log Consumer: could not retreive SAD; 0x80041002. I've tried uninstalling all periphereals and booting and it didn't help Ian C. McIntyre |

McIntyre Start with some basic hardware troubleshooting. Download a drive diagnostic utility from the drive manufacturer's web site and run the diagnostics on the drive. Check the memory using these two programs. Run them each for several hours, not just one quick pass: Also check the power supply. -- Rock MS MVP Windows - Shell/User |

Posting bits of Error Reports is not the way to get the best help. Please check Event Viewer for Warning / Error Report in the System and Application over the last 2 days and post copies. You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important. HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/default...308427&sd=tech Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further information. http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp (Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only) A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer. -- Hope this helps. Gerry ~~~~ FCA Stourport, England Enquire, plan and execute ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Ian C.
