Default Can't install Tweak UI in Win 98 SE

Subject: Can't install Tweak UI in Win 98 SE (1/3/2006)

(Sorry Kelly I messed up your site w/ this querry. Wasn't sure you
were helping out here also).

Re: Tweak UI (the note at Power Toys download site said this would work in
Win98 also). I initially saw the scoop at following site, I believe (before
went to Microsoft site). This is what I copied from that site:

NoBuck$ Freeware connection
Tweak UI v1.33 : 111Kb Homepage
Upgraded version of the Microsoft "Power Toy" for use of modifying the
appearance and behavior of Windows. For Windows 9x, Me, 2000, NT--

I tried to install TweakUI in my Win 98 SE (downloaded a day ago from
Microsoft
site for Power Toys) but got error message:

"The TWEAKUIPOWERTOYSETUP.EXE file is linked to a missing export
Kernel32.dll -GetDllDirectoryW" .

Immediately after another Win 98 error message (w/ the red background/white
X) popped up behind the 1st:

".... (file path here)... A device attached to the system is not functioning".

I note there are 962 "finds" in Google for : "GetDllDirectoryW" but I think
all refer to similar error at Win XP (my system is Win 98 SE).

What exactly is this error message trying to say and how to fix it?

-------------------------------------------------------------

I'm in a vicious circle. Reason I downloaded TweakUI was because in some
Forum post somewhere I read that it could help solve my problem ("Win 98
dial-up won't remember password" [in I/E 6]). Now I can't even install
TweakUI.

Don't tell me this may be the wrong version (is latest) or that it won't
work in W98 (I hope not).

Any hope?

It's not the wrong version but very much the wrong newsgroup.

It is yes, but that's not very constructuve is it?

A common reason for W98 not remembering your dial-up password is that you
don't log on with an identity when Windows starts.
Tweak UI will help in that you can set it to remember your logon name and
password automatically, but it's not absolutely essential.

Set Windows up so that it prompts you to log on when it starts and see if
this cures your problem....although this is still making you input a password
of some kind....Doh!

It means whatever you are running isn't the right version, for exactly the same reason as XP's people get it. That call is only in XP SP1 or later suggesting you are trying to install Tweakui 2.10 (for XP SP1 later). In 98 Tweakui was on the 98 CD, maybe it is in 98SE too.

Your download is not from the same site as your description.
TWEAKUIPOWERTOYSETUP.EXE is the XP version.
Detailed answer in the Win98 group where you multiposted a similar
question.

It's because they stupidly hit Cancel rather than Ok.

Maybe not but the OP appears to be in the habit of

a) Posting in the wrong newsgroupd
b) Wasting people's time by multiposting

Unless he is encouraged to follow basic newsgroup etiquette
he will continue to waste respondents' time.

Well, I hope everyone had a happy holiday.

I posted in these particular 2 forums to kill 2 birds w/one stone because
wasn't sure which one would be best nor which one actually applied; but
reckoned better try XP as well since that's what Google seemed to suggest
might be where the subject would be most heavily discussed.

My thanx to Martin Ellis, David Candy and Alan Edwards for some really
constructive and hepful responses.

Regarding password, I've tried many things over several days (including
Martin Ellis's suggestion - and then some) but there appear to be other
fundamental things awry as well, I now see. By the way, the "remember
password" tick box was dimmed and when I finally got it activated, it didn't
really make any dif. Things worked OK for a while after I ran the 'Repair
Explorer' tool (why, I can't imagine) [in System Info, I think it was] but
back to square 1 on re-boot.

Anyway, said enough here. Tweak UI is the current issue. Will pop over to
Win 98 forum, as suggested.

Appreciate everyone's help. Don't know how you make the time.
