Default data execution prevention

Hi all,
I have been trying to search for certain .avi's on my pc using the
search facility within Xp. I have found that when avi's are found I get
an information box telling me that data execution prevention has
prevented me from opening "dangerous" files. (my words, can't remember
exact wording)
This doesn't happen with other filetypes or programs so I wonder what is
happening.
After the above condition Windows also reports that it has detected an
error and has to close giving me the option of sending a report to
Microsoft.
I have followed the suggestion of the data execution protection info box
to check for viruses and or spyware etc. which I have done but my
machine is clean.
I have both a hardware and software firewall, antivirus, antispyware
and antimalware software installed, all of which are programmed to run
in real time and nothing has been trapped recently.
All latest updated and patches have been applied to Xp.
Regards
Tony

Do you have a divx codec installed. Some versions of divx cause this error.

Hi Kerry,

Thanks for your help, I'm downloading v6.1, I hope that will fix it as I
don't see a "turn off DEP" button only 2 different ways of turning it on.

Regards

Tony

You have to edit the boot.ini file and change the /noexecute=whatever to
/noexecute=AlwaysOff

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875352

Hopefully v6.1 will work. DEP is a good thing to have on. Hardware DEP
offers some protection against buggy or malicious code.
