Some application(sort of Download Manager) designed to connect to remote
site and communicate between site and application on local(client)PC (manage items on site, download). Should I set Exceptions in Windows XP firewall for this apps? (Network Connections> Change Windows Firewall Settings >Exceptions ..) Application work (download) files without any changing in Windows firewall from my side. I mean, could the setting win firewall exception for this apps make downloads more stable? Or no any difference? |

You shouldn't use the Windows Firewall because it does not monitor outgoing
calls to the web, only incoming calls. Use a firewall such as the free Zone Alarm 6 from http://www.zonelabs.com/ and then set the Programs settings for programs that you want to access your PC remotely to allow them internet and server access instead of asking for permissions. My windows Firewall is always enabled; just not clear is there a sense to set permissions for this specific apps, meaning this can make downloads more stable? Thanks. |

In your case, you do not need the Windows firewall because you have a router. Both of those block inbound. If you want to stop unwanted outbound traffic, get something like ZA. |

Well, historically I have Windows firewall enabled, and have no any problems. Will the setting permission for specific apps(Download Manager) improve someting (i.e. reduce possible errors when download files, etc)?? Thanks. |
