Default Error Message "USB for Windows is not initialised"

I am trying to install a negative/slide scanner. I have run through the whole
checklist on WinXP for scanner errors. I'v4e re-installed the driver, checked
out Device Manager which says the driver and UESB hubs work OK. Windows
detects the new hardware and says it is installed and reay for use.The same
problem occurs on two computers.

I start the application, select the TWAIN driver as instructed, but when I
press "Acquire", I get the above message.

Would appreciate any ideas....
