I had a bad computer, did some work on it and used my copy of XP Pro to get
it up and running before I went out to buy a seperate license for it. Now I
would like to just change the license rather than start over from scratch.
Can this be done?

You have to do a "Repair Installation" with the new disk and when asked,
insert the new Product Code Number.

Do a repair install. It will ask for the license number. Input the new
license.
