Hi everyone,

as some of you might know, the Windows 98 "Save As..." dialog box, besides being
too small, clumsy, etc., has one annoying behavior. It lets you double-click
through a folder shortcut, while replacing the name of the file to be saved with
the name of the folder shortcut.

(The next paragraph is a more detailed example if you don't know what I am
talking about - so you can skip it if you do!)

Here is an example. You want to save a file called "example.abc". On your
desktop, you have a shorcut to a custom folder somewhere deep inside your hard
drive. Say this shorcut is called "Folder.lnk". Now, you click on the Desktop
icon, and then double-click on "Folder" (note that .lnk extensions are not
displayed by default even with all file extensions enabled). The Save As dialog
box indeed takes you to the folder that the shortcut is referring to, but now
the "File name" field, instead of "example.abc", you have "Folder.lnk"!!

The Windows XP "Save As..." dialog box does not have this quirk, i.e. it does
not replace the file name with the folder shortcut name.

Based on what I was able to read on the Internet, Windows XP comes with versions
5.82 and 6.0 of comctl32.dll, whereas previous versions of Windows would be
using 5.81 or earlier depending on the configuration. (This is according to
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/de...e/versions.asp.)

I would like to ask someone using a Windows Me system and a Windows 2000 system
to test this behavior. I am wondering if it is the same as on Windows 98 or not.
I guess it should be the same, but I am not sure if comctl32.dll is the only
thing that determines this behavior, and I am not totally sure Windows 2000
users actually have the same file as Widnows 98/Me users.

Win Me with IE6 SP1 does not display the problem as described. That is
when using Save As and selecting the shortcut to a folder the file name
remains unaltered and is saved in the required location. The same is true
of Win Me with IE5.5, that is out of the box with no updates.
Comctl32.dll is version 5.81.

Thanks for the reply. (Just to make sure, you are not using an Office Save As
dialog box by any chance instead of just the standard Windows dialog box?)

This is interesting. What could be the source of the behavior, if not
comctl32.dll?

The size of my comctl32.dll is 548 624 bytes, the file version is 5.81. Under
"Product version", it says 5.50.4916.400. Is yours the same?

I would have said so if that was what I was using. I was saving a simple
txt file from Notepad. No version of MS Office installed on the two
virtual machines I used for the test.

Win Me - out of the box - v5.81.4134.100, 581,632 bytes dated 8 June 2000
(RTM date for Win Me).
Win Me with IE6 SP1 and fully patched - v5.81.4916.400, 548,624 bytes
dated 29 Aug 2002 (RTM date for IE6 SP1).

OK, it seems we have the same comctl32.dll from IE6 SP1. Could you point me to
some other files which affect the behavior of the Open/Save As dialog boxes?

It is also known that the ones in Win ME resemble the ones in Windows 2000
visually. My guess also is that Windows 2000 does not have the folder shorcut
issue either. Do you know which are all the files that are involved?

Ivan, I don't know how far your energies and resources extend, but have you
looked at:

This is the so-called 'Unofficial Win 98 Serice Pack' and my superficial
impression of it is that it provides a combination of MS update links as
well as upgrades of various dlls from ME. You would need access to an ME
installation disk, of course, but, alternatively, if you could find someone
in the ng that has installed the USP, they could tell you if the behaviour
is altered. It provides other amenities, such as support for flash or thumb
drives, etc..
There is a link to a forum which has posts from users, if that's any
help.

I confirm that is what happens in Win98SE. Click any file name, not just ..lnk files, & it will replace the file name to be saved. That is useful, except in the case of .lnk files.

It's simple enough to first R-Clk & copy the true name to be saved from the name box. It's already highlighted! Paste it back in after clicking the Desktop .lnk, & all is well!

I don't know! And DON'T go making them change it, except for .lnk! It is convenient to be able to click a file name such as... BootitNG_V1.75a.zip... & just need to change a few numbers instead of adding all of them!
