Strange one this.
My wife downloaded some attachment from an E-mail. As parts were in Chinese
language there was a problem decoding them.
Icons have been set up on the desktop that cannot be deleted as the file
cannot be found or appears corrupted.
I know how to shift all programme icons etc. I have tried microsoft task
manager. I have tried safe mode. I do not want to use system restore as I
have just spent ages loading and anti-virus/firewall software programme. No
website can help me and Microsofts website doesn't cover it.
Please please help me. All the usual ways of shifting them don't work.

Are the files/icons visible when exploring "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop"?

How about when exploring "C:\Documents and Settings\<Username>\Desktop"?

If the answer to both the above questions is "No", then they have been added to the Desktop namespace via the registry.

Start -> Run -> Regedit

Navigate to:

"HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ex plorer\Desktop\NameSpace"

and check for suspicious entries.

do the same for:

"HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ex plorer\Desktop\NameSpace"

Thanks for the info. The icons are visible in the first two but cannot be

and only found the following there. 10 1a 79 bc 20 f9 c5 01
Has this got anything to do with anything?

If they appear when viewing those folders, they are part of the file system. Don't worry about the namespace.

What is the exact text of the error message you get when you try to delete it?

Can you right-click the file & view properties? If so, what are they?

Is this XP Home or Pro?

One of the twelve files is called CAAFS392 It has 0 bytes.
It is contained under <username> Desktop. There is nothing else in
properties.
It is just strange that it won't delete.
The error message is Cannot delete file :Cannot read from the source file
or disc.
Hopefully there is an easy solution?
