My Gateway desktop PC, running Windows XP, evidently was infected with the
ZLOB virus despite that I use Norton antivirus protection that is updated daily via the professional anti virus software protection provided by Texas Instruments, for which I do some contract work. Efforts to clean the virus from within the Symantec program, doing a daily system scan, were unsuccessful. (I also run Windows Anti-Spyware – beta) Symantec’s next option was the following: They instructed me to shut down all applications, to turn off the restore point software, and to boot in safe mode; then to run a full system scan with all options selected to the deepest level possible. Four hours later, the virus was successfully quaranteened and then cleaned/deleted. Thereafter, they instructed me to go to the register and to examine about eight lines of code for accuracy, but not to change anything. I did RUN, regedit (or whatever the instruction said to type), read the various lines of code and didn’t even touch the keyboard during the process since I’m aware that messing up the registry can be big trouble. Nevertheless, my efforts to reboot in normal mode have been unsuccessful. Also, the system will not let me turn on the restore point software from within the safe mode. I am at my wit’s end. The PC will not boot back to the normal mode. I turn it off, leave it for an hour and reboot but it comes up in safe mode. Next, I press F8 during the boot up and get the screen where you can choose safe or normal. I choose normal but it continues to boot in safe mode. I don’t want to do a full system reinstall on the thought that I’ll then have to spend days reloaded my various applications and then there’s the matter of lost data and word files. Can you offer a solution? -- texrus |

Once booted into safe mode, go to Start | Run. Type in msconfig, click ok. On the boot.ini tab untic the safeboot box. Ok out and reboot. -- Rock MS MVP Windows - Shell/User |
