Default reinstalling windowsxp

I'm trying to help a friend. He wants to reinstall windowsxp, at startup he
receives an error message stated that there is a problem with explorer.exe.
I told him to insert windows disc and reboot and then he can install. He
said that he can not because a newer verison is installed. How can he
install windowsxp from disc with an older version.

Hi

You can slipstream the XP Pro CD so as to install without having to revert
to SP1 first:

This error message shouldn't occur. He is trying to install XP over the
existing copy by running it from within Windows. If he does as you have told
him the Windows setup program will kick in. He needs to check to see that
his CD-ROM is the first boot option before proceeding, if it isn't then he
needs to change it.
Visit my website http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org Click the Win XP Faq
button and take a look at questions 13, 79 and 85. Question 85 is an
illustrated guide to installing Windows XP. This assumes he has a boxed
retail copy of windows xp. If he only has recovery disks supplied by the pc
manufactuer he will need to check the PC's user guide for details of how to
re-install.

The message about trying to install an older version will occur if you
boot from a CD that is the Original Release or Service Pack 1 version
and the installed XP has been upgraded to Service Pack 2.

The solution is to create a new Install CD with Service Pack 2
slipstreamed into it.
