Default No network after SP2 re-install

Don't ask me why I did it. I thought it might solve a problem. I have a Dell
laptop with fully patched XP Pro and IE6. Out of desperation in trying to
solve another problem, I uninstalled SP2 and then reinstalled it. More recent
MS updates were not uninstalled.

after reinstall of SP2, I have serious network problems. Initially, I'd get
multiple svchost errors leading to hangs. After stopping network and other
apps from running at startup, the laptop seems pretty stable, although I have
no network connectivity - wireless or ethernet.

Is there a way to recover from this, or is it start over from scratch time???

Ipconfig reports shows wrong IP address, wrong subnet, etc. When using Intel
2200BG wireless adapter software, it sees wireless routers and will connect,
but reports limited or no connectivity. Attempts to change configuration
produce wireless software report that "another application is controlling the
adapter."

My system worked great until I shot myself in the foot.

One additional symptom. Occasionally, I get a message that the RPC Service
has stopped unexpectedly and the computer must shut down. I've never seen
this fatal error before.

Hardware firewall, software firewall, up to date AV software, plus anti-spy,
so virus or worm infection is not suspected. F-Prot scan today found nothing.

Did you do driver updates after you installed SP2?

Thanks for replying, RA. I don't understand your question. I had a fully up
to date XP Pro installation, uninstalled SP2, re-installed SP2. I had to
uninstall the software for the wireless adapter, since I started getting
svchost errors.

The system boots and is stable with no wireless software installed. When I
reinstall the wireless software, it runs from startup and svchost errors
return.

Actually, with wireless software installed, it reports it has connected to
my router at high speed with strong signal strength, but I also get "limited
or no connectivity" from the tray icon. after a minute or two, I get either a
hang due to svchost errors or a fatal error that RPC service has terminated.
Connectivity through the ethernet port has similar problems, so it's not a
wireless problem, per se.

My impression is that the Intel wireless software installs both the adapter
driver and the connectivity app.

What drivers are you suggesting? Did the SP2 re-install overwrite some
drivers that had been installed and working?

Some drivers and apps aren't compatible with SP2 and must be updated..
