Default Problems with Quicktime

Could somebody please help me out? Recently, for some reason, the version of
Quicktime I have on my computer has stopped working. I had Quicktime version
6 but downloaded the newer version 7, and thats when I started having
problems. When I'd go to the Apple site to view trailers, the broken film
link icon would appear. So I thought it was a problem with QT 7, so I
uninstalled it and installed QT 6 again. That did not work either for when I
went onto the site it said I needed plugins to view pages on there, which it
recommended was QT! So thought I'd get rid of 6 and download 7 with iTunes 6
again, but now half way through the installation process it just stops, at
the point where it says "registering product" and doesn't install on my
machine.
So I decided to download QT Alternative which worked for a while, until I
noticed that my DVD/CD drives had disappeared from My Computer & Windows
Explorer! So I proceeded to perform a system restore to a time when I new
thet'd be there. It worked, but for some reason it seemed to have uninstalled
QT Alternative because that wasn't working! So I uninstalled everything to do
with Quicktime on my machine and tried to download QTA again, did, installed
it but it also said I need plugins when I went to the Apple site. So now I
have no version of Quicktime on my machine, can somebody tell me whats going
on?

Thank you

Besides the fact that both iTunes and Quicktime are poor products. What
version of Windows are you using?
