Default IMPASS with Hard Drive

Apparently i have a virus - because i have deleted everything from my hard
drive ( according to the add/remove programs screen ) and still only have
approx 400mg left of space on my hard drive - my thought is it isnt actually
deleting files when i tell it to - and part 2 of my problem i cant format the
hd using format command - it gets me to the step where there are other files
using the drive - try to dismount - and it goes no where - just goes away -
cant reinstall windows xp pro with out a clean hd!!
HELP!!!!!!!!!
PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you want to clean-install Windows you have to boot from the XP cd,
not try and format from within Windows itself. See:

Norton protected recycle bin?

You can't format the system drive from within windows. Boot from the XP
CD to format and install windows.

Hold on there, hoss! Are you really sure you want to format and reinstall?
Why? That's a pretty drastic step for someone with your apparent level of
knowledge.

"Add/Remove Programs" -- as the name says -- enables the removal of programs,
e.g., Microsoft Word, iTunes, Adobe Reader, or any of the other applications that
may be installed on your computer. This tool does NOT remove any of the data you
have stored on your hard drive -- all those mp3s and photos you have downloaded,
for instance, not to mention all of your emails and the 17 chapters of your
unfinished novel. It's more than likely that your hard drive is filled up with
data -- which can't be replaced after you delete it -- rather than with
application programs.

Have you looked at the contents of your hard drive with Windows Explorer?

If you're just trying to get more space on your hard drive, have you run Disk
Cleanup?

If you really want to reformat and reinstall XP, follow Malke's advice -- but
remember, you'll have to reinstall all of your application programs from their
original CDs (or re-download them) and restore all of your data from your backups
(you did make backups, right?).
