Default Possible problem with DVD/CD-RW, computer freezing!

Hi

My PC has started behaving strangely and freezing for +30 seconds at a time and
then Ok for a minute and then freezing again, no mouse movement etc...
I have noticed that when it happens I am not able to open the DVD/CD-RW drive
draw!! But I can open my second DVD drive draw. Sometimes when I open and close
the RW draw it fails to open again!!

Can this cause the PC to lock up???

I have tried uninstalling the drive and installing again but still same problem.
The system has had a Virus scan with NAV using latest def files.
The PC is Dell 8200 running XPHE SP2

When I had the problem I already had a blank disk in the drive and it failed to
burn to it as it said that Direct CD was already in use??? Strange as nothing
else was running other than Nero!!

I have looked at the EventLog and found this "atapi" error quite a few times

"The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort1, did not respond within the timeout period" or
"The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort1, is not ready for access yet"

I have also found the following when I tried previously to copy a DVD but it
failed during the Burn period

"The driver detected a controller error on \Device\CdRom0" and
"The driver detected a controller error on \Device\CdRom1"

Any help on how to solve the issue would be much appreciated

Regards
Steve

First thing to do is change the ribbon cables.

Thanks Cari

Do you mean purchase new ones? Are these readily available? Could this cause the
draw not to come out when the button is pressed?
Sorry for the questions but like to get all info.

Thanks
Steve

The cables are just ordinary IDE cables which are readily available. Bad
cables might cause the drive computer (it does have one) to hang. It would
therefore might ignore whatever command comes from the front panel. Bad
cables, or merely just one which isn't seated correctly, can easily cause
your experience. In any case, you need to remove cabling as a possible
cause.

Thanks Jim
I have just opened up the PC tower and removed all the dust and reseated all
cables and pressed on all boards to make sure all is seated properley.
If it returns I will try a new writer as I have a spare one. If that doesn't
work then I will buy a new IDE cable.

Thanks for your help

Steve
