Default Why change to proxy settings suddenly ?

Everthing was working fine - I get broadband internet from NTL. Then I went
away for the festive period and when I got back I couldn't access the
internet - kept giving me "page unavailable"
The NTL chap was very helpful and eventually he advised I change my internet
settings giving me a proxy IP & port number to enter. This I did and the
internet was mine again.
Few problems & questions though -
1. Can't access my Email anymore - keeps giving me the "can't find POP
server" error message.
2. Real Player no longer plays any streaming audio - keeps giving me a
"general error"
3. Why did I have to change suddenly to a proxy server after 2 years perfect
service ?

I've tried playing around with the tools options on Email & Real Player all
all the proxy settings look good.
Anyone advise what's going on and give me some advice ?

Thanks - Andy J
