A program called "Error Guard" has appeared on my neighbor's computer. When
his computer starts up, it tells him that it has discovered errors on his system and asks if he wants to remove them (which I think involves a fee). Does anyone know of this program? Is it spyware and/or did he inadvertently download it? Should he uninstall it? Thanks Drew |

Personnaly I would remove it and use a good spyware tool like XSoft
http://paretologic.com/xoftspy/lp/14/ or Spyware Doctor. http://www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/download/ Both need registration and a fee but it saves you time and money in the end. -- Regards John MCP Windows XP Professional "Drew" <drew@home.net> wrote in message news:eQeIZBYEGHA.3868@TK2MSFTNGP09.phx.gbl... >A program called "Error Guard" has appeared on my neighbor's computer. >When his computer starts up, it tells him that it has discovered errors on >his system and asks if he wants to remove them (which I think involves a >fee). > > Does anyone know of this program? Get rid of it.
Download, install, run, update and run again. They are all good, FREE utilities. Make sure you update every program, even if you just downloaded it. You must have the latest updates. Without updates, you have a gun without ammo. You also need to use more than one anti-scumware program. One program will *not* catch everything. 1) SpywareBlaster [[SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for spyware - it prevents it from ever being installed. The most important step you can take is to secure your system. And SpywareBlaster is the most powerful protection program available.]] http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html 2) Spybot S & D (More for the advanced user) http://www.safer-networking.org/inde...&page=download 3) HijackThis (More for the advanced user) http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html 3a) HijackThis (direct download) http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip 4) Bazooka Adware and Spyware Scanner v1.13 http://www.kephyr.com/spywarescanner...ource=appvisit 5) Ad-aware SE Personal http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download/ ----- MVPS HOSTS file is a free download from: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/ Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts File http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm -- Hope this helps. It a trojan and a phishing scam where you have to give your name and CREDIT
CARD # to people you don't know, and certainly should not trust. What will they do with your card #. How did the so called security program get on your computer? Did you knowingly install it? Of course NOT. Keep your card in your wallet and your antivirus and anti spyware tools updated - always. -- Regards, Richard Urban Microsoft MVP Windows Shell/User Quote from George Ankner: If you knew as much as you think you know, You would realize that you don't know what you thought you knew! 'ErrorGuard is a spyware from GAIN which claims it can fix the problems
on your computer if you pay the tens dollars amount. In fact, the software is a shell of a spyware that will collect your personal information.' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Error_guard Wes has already advised how to remove it. regards, S.Sengupta[MS-MVP] Drew wrote: > A program called "Error Guard" has appeared on my neighbor's computer.
