A program called "Error Guard" has appeared on my neighbor's computer. When
his computer starts up, it tells him that it has discovered errors on his
system and asks if he wants to remove them (which I think involves a fee).

Does anyone know of this program? Is it spyware and/or did he inadvertently
download it? Should he uninstall it?

Personnaly I would remove it and use a good spyware tool like XSoft
http://paretologic.com/xoftspy/lp/14/ or Spyware Doctor.
http://www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/download/ Both need registration and
a fee but it saves you
time and money in the end.

Get rid of it.

Download, install, run, update and run again. They are all
good, FREE utilities. Make sure you update every program, even if you
just downloaded it. You must have the latest updates. Without updates,
you have a gun without ammo. You also need to use more than one
anti-scumware program. One program will *not* catch everything.

It a trojan and a phishing scam where you have to give your name and CREDIT
CARD # to people you don't know, and certainly should not trust. What
will they do with your card #. How did the so called security program get on
your computer? Did you knowingly install it? Of course NOT.

Keep your card in your wallet and your antivirus and anti spyware tools
updated - always.
