Not automatically, no.

In order to automatically configure a dual boot you would have to
install Windows XP with Windows 98 already in place and present.

Add Windows 98 or Me to installed XP:

Good luck

No...
but if your bios has an option as to which drive you
want to boot from...you could do it that way...
but considering you'd have to reconfigure the h/w you may want to
install if fresh
then fix the mbr from the xp recovery console

If your WinXP system partition uses NTFS then the
you must either swap disks in the BIOS or you must
install a third-party boot manager that is capable of
booting off either disk. XOSL is such a boot manager
and it's free.

Thanks for the replies.

Thankfully this machine with the XP has FAT 32 as the file system. Now I
want to add the second harddrive from another computer that already has
Win98SE installed on it and use this as the second drive in the subject
machine. If I do this and do something about fixing the MBR will I get dual
boot? Or will I have to reinstall the Win 98 SE on the second drive? Thanks.

Hi,

Follow the link to Doug Knox's site given you by Ron Martell, it has the
answers you need. And no, you will not need to reinstall Win98.

There are two issues to be resolved here:
a) Make the machine boot into Win98. This could easily be fixed
by making an entry in c:\boot.ini. There is no need to "fix" the
MBR - it's the same for all current versions of Windows.
b) The Win98 system drive letter. I assume that Win98 ran on
drive C: before, hence it must still run on drive C:. Unfortunately
this drive letter is now used by WinXP.

You now have two options:
- Re-install Win98 on drive D:. This will disrupt your WinXP boot
environment but this is easily fixed.
- Use a boot manager (e.g. XOSL) that can hide partitions from
each other. When booting into WinXP then it would show you
both partitions. When booting into Win98 then it would hide the
WinXP partition, thus freeing drive letter C: for WinXP to use.

Post again if you require further details.

I went to the site of Doug Knox and followed his instructions exactly I
thought. I did see the bootsec.dos file on my C: drive. I then started my
computer from the XP install disc and ran the repair program and ran
'fixboot'. When I rebooted I did not get any option to boot to a second OS.
Is this any different because the second OS is on a second hard drive or do
I need to give some other command with 'fixboot' to find the second drive
and its OS? TIA.

Paul
