I tried that yesterday, but the fact is that it is uninstalled. It gives me
an error message and tells me to go to add/remove programs to reinstall it or
something, which when I do go there, I cannot find where it is.

Windows' volume control is part of the operating system, so you can't
uninstall it.

Could you be referring to certain software that came with your sound card?

No, it is definetly the volume control. When I go to Acessories>Entertainment
...it's gone
and also when I try to re-add to the task bar it says I have to install it.
It disapeared after I did a windows provided clean up of un-used components.
That is the only way I think it uninstalled. I still have a soundcard and it
is activated. It is the volume that is uninstalled and missing.

Which Windows provided cleanup did you use? The automatic prompt that
removes only unused shortcuts from the desktop or the portion of Disk
Cleanup that brings up the Add/Remove Programs list? If it was Disk Cleanup
showing the Add/Remove list, it's possible you uninstalled something
related to the sound card. The "frequency of use" isn't always accurate in
the Add/Remove screen. Something that looks like it is never used, may
actually be needed.

Since your sound card install seems to be okay (shows as present and
working in Device Manager and Control Panel> Sounds), have you tried
reinstalling the drivers for the card? On my system, the Windows provided
Volume Controls get supplanted with ones from nVidia. Perhaps something
similar happens on your system and reinstalling the drivers would restore
the missing pieces of your volume controls. Worth a try anyhow...

My soundcard came with the computer I have no way to install it again.
I just noticed Paint and Calculator are gone as well. The cleanup I used is
not in the add/remove programs. It says it will remove unused components to
free up disk space. But I didn't want Calculator, Paint, and Volume Control
to be uninstalled.
I went control panel>Performance and maintenance>Free up space on your hard
disk. Then it ran its course, I also performed the windows components one.
After that I didn't have Volume Control, Paint, or Calculator. Please help!!

You don't need to reinstall the sound card - just the drivers for it. Your
computer may have come with a disk marked "drivers." That would be a good
place to check for it.

Okay,that is the Disk Cleanup tool. Also reachable by going to Start>
Accessories> System Tools> Disk Cleanup. The portion for "components" hooks
into Add/Remove Programs and shows the Add/Remove Windows Components
interface.

It's kind of misleading how it shows up with boxes already checked for you.
It is not making recommendations, it is wanting you to go through the list
and remove checks from items you no longer want installed.

You can get Paint and Calculator back using this interface.
Open Control Panel. Click on Add or Remove Programs. On the screen that
appears, click "Add/Remove Windows Components" in the left hand column. A
new screen will appear.

"Accessories and Utilities" should already be highlighted. If it's not,
click on it to select it. Then click the Details button. On the next
screen, select Accessories and click Details again. Finally, on the screen
that appears, place check marks next to Calculator and Paint. Click OK and
Windows should reinstall those programs for you.

There's a bit of snag in getting Volume Controls back. Once it's installed
and uninstalled, it doesn't show up in Add/Remove Components again. Why I
don't know but that's how it is. So if reinstalling sound drivers doesn't
give back the Volume Controls, you could search your Windows XP CD for the
file that runs Volume which is named sndvol32.exe. If the file is
compressed on the CD it's name will show as sndvol32.ex_ You can use Start>
Run> MSCONFIG> EXPAND to expand the file properly.

Or easier if you have another computer available nearby that runs XP is to
copy the file and transfer it to your PC. It should be placed in the
\Windows\System32\ folder. Create a shortcut to that file. Rename it
"Volume Controls" and place that shortcut into your start menu.

I don't think I got a disk, it came from Dell, they shipped me the computer.

directions on how to restore a single operating system file.
