Hey guys! I am new to the forum but have read a few posts and it sounds like a helpful community, so... I have been burning and playing DVDs on this drive up until last week when something happened and I really don't know what. In My Computer (XP Pro) my NEC ND-2510A is labelled DVD-RW Drive (E as always but when I try and burn/play a DVD there is no DVD drive. WMP reads the drive as CD Drive (E and says that I need codecs to play the DVD I watched just 2 weeks ago. When I go into Control Panel>System>Hardware Tab>Device Manager and get the properties of the drive its type is a CD Drive and Windows has given it CD-ROM Drive drivers (cdrom.sys, imapi.sys, redbook.sys, storprop.sys). So I got the firmware from both Maddog (The makers of the drive) and NEC and tried flashing the drive with them in both Normal Windows mode AND Safe mode. That did nothing. So then I right-clicked, uninstalled the drive, rebooted, re-detected the drive let Windows sort itself out then tried flashing again. To no avail as Windows had already installed those cdrom drivers again. So now I am just goingg to buy a new drive BUT... Will Windows give that cdrom drivers aswell? Thanks for reading sorry for the length, SilverStream. P.S. I have also re-installed windows and the problem is still there. -- SilverStream |

The firmware version 2.18, is that what you ended up with from NEC..? Was the
F/W update from Maddog the same or a different version..? The drivers you mention (cdrom.sys, imapi.sys, redbook.sys, storprop.sys) are correct and work fine for both my DVD burner and DVD-ROM drives.. What burning app(s) are you using, has it been updated lately..? j;-j "SilverStream" wrote: > > Hey guys! You need to read the cautions and scroll to the bottom and see if it applies
to your situation, heed all warnings, see link below.. http://support.necsam.com/optical/do...eadme.asp?ID=5 This site seems to verify the version 326 as "new" NEC F/W.. I also see a Mad dog OEM version 205c, see link below.. http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1837 Question: Do you have a direct link to the Mad Dog customer support web site for your optical drive..? Was the optical drive bought retail and installed by you or was it included in the computer by it's OEM, ie..Dell, HP, Compaq, etc..? Do you know what the original F/W version was initially..? Question: What burning software are you using Nero, Sonic, Roxio, etc..? Burning software adds it's own drivers in addition to the signed XP generic drivers, updating the burning app may update that apps drivers as well.. A good read and reference on burning CD's in XP.. http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.php See how to disable the inbuilt XP CD burner, generally related to optical drives that use third party burning apps.. http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;826510 Free diagnostic tool, see link below.. http://www.lavalys.com/products/down...?pid=1&lang=en Use Everest to ID the firmware version.. Devices, Windows Devices, DVD/CD-ROM drives, click your drive, see Hardware ID _______<F/W ver>___... Hope this can help.. j;-j "SilverStream" wrote: > > Dunno.
