Yesterday when I got home I found out that I didn't have any sound on my PC.
I tried to connect to the Internet using my dial-up modem but I couldn't
connect. I checked modem diagnostocs and everything was OK with my modem. I
checked the device manager then I noticed an exclamation mark on one of the
audio devices (I don't remember what it was anymore) so I uninstalled it then
restarted my computer. After restarting my PC, it was asking for a driver for
a device called "Unknown". I tried installing the device drivers for my sound
card but that didn't help. Everytime I booted up I was getting the same
"Unknown" driver being asked from me. I went over to the Device Manager again
and disabled "Unknown." But that didn't help. I reinstalled my sound card
(CMI8738/C3DX PCI) and modem (D-Link DFM-562IS) but still couldn't make it
work. I tried reinstalling Windows XP Professional (an upgrade over my
existing Windows XP Professional installation) but that didn't work. When I
did a new installation, it installed Windows XP Pro to my second hard drive,
D:\, and I was able to make both devices work there. But whenever I select
the Windows XP Pro that has been setup on C:\, I can't make them work!

How do I install a new copy of Windows XP Pro to my C:\ drive by just
rewriting all the data that's there and keeping all my programs installed? My
Windows XP Pro CD is just an upgrade CD; it's not a bootable CD that can
perform installation of the software when you let the PC boot via CD-ROM.

I also tried to have my Windows XP repaired, but that didn't work.

Why not identify the drivers for each device and copy them to same location
on "C" drive. The when Install wizard searches for drivers point to location
that you copied to.
